Spicy Chicken Kondattam Recipe

Chicken Kondattam is an Easy & tasty Malabar dish. The chicken is fried in tasty masala and then the fried chicken pieces are coated with spicy, saucy, & tangy gravy! This is a must-try recipe if you are bored with regular chicken fry.

There are many styles of preparing this recipe. Here I have prepared a regular chicken fry masala instead you can also use soy sauce in the marination. I have shallowly fried the chicken by covering it with a lid and later opened the lid to make it crispy. But you can deep fry the chicken.

The chili Flakes gives a real spicy taste and when the sauce is added it gives us a real flavor of hot and spicy chicken. This tasty dish goes very well with Indian bread, Appam, Ghee Rice, etc,

Chicken Kondattam is a tasty dish where chicken pieces are coated with spicy, saucy, & tangy gravy!


  • 500 gms Chicken

  • Oil for frying

  • 4-5 Dry Red Chili

  • 2-3 spring Curry Leaves

  • 50 gms Shallots Chopped

  • 1 Tablespoon Ginger Garlic Chili paste

  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric powder

  • ½ teaspoon Coriander Powder

  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri Red Chili Powder

  • ½ teaspoon Garam Masala Powder

  • 2 teaspoon Crushed Chili flakes

  • 2 tablespoon Tomato Sauce

  • ¼ cup hot water

  • Marination
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric Powder

  • 1 teaspoon Pepper Powder

  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red Chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder

  • 2 teaspoon Lemon juice

  • 1 tablespoon Ginger Garlic Chili Paste

  • Salt as required


  • Marinate the chicken pieces with the above-mentioned ingredients and leave them aside for 30 mins or more.chicken-kondattam
  • Heat oil in a large pan. Fry the marinated chicken in batches until cooked well. chicken-kondattam
  • Transfer the fried chicken to a plate. Transfer excess oil to a bowl and leave some oil in the same pan for sauteing the masala.chicken-kondattam
  • Add the dry red chilies and fry for a minute. Add the green chilies, chopped shallots, and curry leaves & saute for 1-2 mins.chicken-kondattam
  • Add the spice powders – chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala & saute until the raw smell goes away.chicken-kondattam
  • Add dried red chilies flaxes, tomato sauce, and mix well.chicken-kondattam
  • Add little hot water to the masala and allow it to boil. chicken-kondattam
  • Finally, add the fried chicken pieces and combine well until the masala is well coated with the chicken and remove from flame.chicken-kondattam
