Kappa Puzhukku/Kappa Vevichathu

Kappa Puzhukku/Kappa Vevichathu is a staple food that originates from the state of Kerala in India. In Kerala, Tapioca is known as Kappa/Maracheeni/Kolli and usually prepared in many varieties.

Tapioca/ Kappa is consumed as a rice substitute by many people in Kerala. If you think tapioca will give you a feeling of bloating in the stomach, then you are wrong! It has dietary fibers that help for cooling the body post fasting for several hours. And also It regulates the stomach acids, thereby aiding in smooth digestion. This will not give you the feeling of fullness and will also not cause constipation.

In Kerala, people use tapioca for preparing several dishes on almost a regular basis. From chips to biryani, tapioca is used to prepare different dishes. Since Tapioca contains a starchy substance we have to cook tapioca and drain the water. We can cook in a pan or pressure cooker. Here I used a simple style of cooking tapioca.

A plate of humble kappa puzhukku or simply kappa is a comforting dish made using boiled tapioca, grated coconut, red chilies, curry leaves, and different spices. This dish can be consumed at any time of the day and tastes the best when it accompanied by some meat or fish curry.

Tapioca can be cooked with or without turmeric. Here I have cooked tapioca in a Pressure cooker with excess water and later drained it because of the starch in the tapioca. Adding green chilies while boiling tapioca will make it spicy and flavorful.

Here I have used broken Red chilies for making it spicy but you can also use green chilly or chili flakes when tempering in coconut oil. Usually, I like having Kappa is with meat curry or with spicy chutney(Mulaku Chammanthi) and a cup of black tea.
